As the world continues to battle the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the shutdown measures have also impacted street animals, including dogs, cows, and birds, who once relied on food from roadside eateries and volunteers. The concerns raised by renowned animal rights activists about animals being potential carriers of the virus have added to the confusion and distress. Without regular access to food and water, these animals are increasingly becoming restless and aggressive due to the summer heat and hunger.
India’s Livestock Census of 2012 reported approximately 17.13 million stray dogs and 5.28 million cattle in the country. By 2018, estimates suggested that India’s stray dog population ranged between 30 to 35 million. With the nationwide lockdown, these street animals have lost their daily food sources, and reports have surfaced of animal abandonment, mistreatment of healthy strays, and resistance to feeding or sheltering them.
In response to this, SRAM & MRAM Group, in partnership with India’s Central and State government employees, has launched a humanitarian food sponsorship drive aimed at feeding street animals during the pandemic. As part of its Covid-19 relief CSR efforts, SRAM & MRAM Group is actively distributing food to hungry canines and animals across India. The initiative also involves replenishing water bowls with fresh water to provide a much-needed respite for these animals amidst the summer heatwaves.
The food and water distribution is carried out daily by the dedicated employees and volunteers of SRAM & MRAM Group in various cities across the country, bringing relief to countless animals in need.
